QUALIFICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP - MICS (London)

To be eligible for election as an individual Member a person shall comply with the following conditions: -

(a) Shall be not less than twenty-one years of age.

(b) Shall have been engaged in the business or profession of a shipbroker or in a business having a bona fide connection with the profession of ship broking in the United Kingdom or elsewhere for a period or periods aggregating at least four years either as a principal or employee and shall be so engaged at the time of application for election, provided that if the Controlling Council shall so determine three years may be accepted in the place of four years in the case of any candidate who has served such three years in a firm or company under any Fellow or Fellows;
(c) Shall have passed the Qualifying Examinations of The Institute;
(d) Shall have satisfied the Controlling Council that he or she is a fit and proper person to become a Member;
(e) Upon successful election and payment of the appropriate fee, the candidate will receive a certificate stating that he or she is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and will thereafter be able to add the initials MICS after his or her name. The certificate at all times remains the property of the Institute and has to be returned if for any reason the person ceases to be a Member (at which time the right to be called a Member will cease).

 

QUALIFICATION FOR FELLOWSHIP - FICS (London)

To be eligible for promotion to a Fellow a person shall comply with the following conditions:
(a) Shall be not less than twenty-five years of age:
(b) Shall be a Member;
(c) Shall have been engaged for the six years immediately preceding the date of application in the office of a person, firm, company or body Carrying on the business or profession of a shipbroker and shall have been for not less than one year either: -

i) A principal in a firm or a director of a company carrying on the business or profession of shipbrokers in the United Kingdom or elsewhere; or
ii) A person holding a position of responsibility in an office of any firm or company or other body carrying on the business of shipbrokers in the United Kingdom or elsewhere.


(d) Shall have satisfied the Controlling Council that he or she is a fit and proper person to become a Fellow.
(e) Upon successful promotion and payment of the appropriate fee, the candidate will receive a certificate stating that he or she is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and will thereafter be able to add the initials FICS after his or her name and to be referred to as a 'Chartered Shipbroker'. The certificate at all times remains the property of the Institute and has to be returned if for any reason the person ceases to be a Fellow (at which time the right to be called a Fellow will cease).

Persons over 35 years of age with minimum of 10 years service in shipping may also apply to be considered for membership by presentation of a dissertation.
Membership of the ICS is much sought after worldwide as it is the highest attainable qualification in the field of shipping and introduces a very high degree of professionalism and business integrity to the industry
